And of course the transcendent "Beautiful Jam" in the second part of that Dark Star. One of the peak moments when the music was clearly playing the band. I always like to imagine Jerry with his back to the audience, tears streaming down his face in ecstasy as those notes pierce the air (just a fantasy - I wasn't there).

Does anybody know if the Beautiful Jam ever made an incarnation again, in any other show? I've never heard it anywhere else.

Right, although it's also on some of the streamable versions at LMA:

The remastered SBD:

The original Betty board:

Not always separately listed, it immediately follows Wharf Rat. One their peak moments, IMHO

I think the next closest thing would be 8/14/71, during the post drums TOO Jam. There is definately a moment there that is very reminiscent, in no small part due to the bright and shiny tone of that SG..

Hey Sko,

I'm not sure he was playing the SG in August. He played several different guitars that year, starting with the SG. But by March/April he was using that custom Alembic, and in the summer switched to a Les Paul TV (a guitar that was literally designed to look better on TV). He was also using a sunburst Les Paul at some point. By the end of the year he was already using the Graham Nash Strat, but I'm guessing that didn't come out until the first tour with Keith in Fall/Winter 71.

My guess would be yes. I can't seem to find any photos from those shows though. Seems clear that by April he was playing the custom guitar with the small body.

And by the time of the Fillmore West closing show (July 2), he was playing the TV for sure.

1971- Sunburst Les Paul

March and April Jer switches to a custom built guitar. Said to be a Alembic project

May Jer breaks out the Natural 57 Fender Strat that Graham Nash gave him

Summer switches to a Gibson Les Paul TV http://www.dozin.com/jers/guitar/history.htm

His tone. Yeah you nailed it. Love the tone he has in 71 than any other year. Sounds like he's on top of a mountain, playing to the gods. Hey sko!
